The Umbwe Route is the most direct and steepest way up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its fast climb and is best for experienced hikers or those who are already used to high altitudes.
This route is very quiet and gives a strong feeling of adventure. The path joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp and continues to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) through Barafu Camp. The climb is fully supported with guides, porters, and cooks.



Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) – Umbwe Camp (2,850m)
Drive from Moshi to the gate for registration.
Start walking through dense rainforest on a steep path.
Camp overnight at Umbwe Camp.
Walking time: 5–6 hours
Day 2: Umbwe Camp – Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Continue climbing through forest and rocky areas.
Reach Barranco Camp and join the Machame Route.
Walking time: 5–6 hours
Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb up the Barranco Wall.
Walk through ups and downs to reach Karanga Camp.
Walking time: 4–5 hours
Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Short and steady walk to Barafu Camp.
Rest early and get ready for the night summit climb.
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Wake at midnight and begin the final push to the summit.
Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise.
Return to Barafu for rest, then down to Mweka Camp.
Walking time: 12–14 hours
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Final walk down through rainforest.
Drive back to Moshi for a hot shower and rest.
Walking time: 3–4 hours
