The Machame Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s known for its beautiful paths and good success rate.

This 7-day trek gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude. You’ll walk through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally reach the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Nights are spent in tents, and your guide, cook, and porters will help you all the way.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)

  • Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (about 1 hour).

  • Begin trekking through the rainforest.

  • Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon.

  • Dinner and overnight in tents.

Walking time: 5–7 hours

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,850m)

  • After breakfast, continue up a steep path through moorland.

  • Enjoy wide views of the mountain and Shira Plateau.

  • Camp at Shira for the night.

Walking time: 4–6 hours

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,600m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

  • Walk up to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp.

  • This helps your body adjust to the altitude.

  • Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Walking time: 6–8 hours

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Climb the famous Barranco Wall, then cross ridges and valleys.

  • Arrive at Karanga Camp for rest, dinner, and overnight.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

  • A short walk to Barafu Camp, the base before the summit.

  • Rest and prepare for the midnight climb.

  • Dinner and early sleep.

Walking time: 3–4 hours

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Wake up around midnight and begin the final climb.

  • Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise – the top of Africa!

  • Take photos and enjoy the moment.

  • Descend to Barafu for a short rest, then down to Mweka Camp.

Walking time: 12–15 hours

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

  • After breakfast, walk down through the forest to the gate.

  • Meet the vehicle and return to Moshi for a hot shower and rest.

Walking time: 3–4 hours
