The Rongai Route is the only path that starts from the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border. It is a quiet and peaceful trail with less crowds. The route has a gentle climb at the beginning, which is good for those who want a slow and steady walk.

This 7-day climb includes an extra day for better adjustment to the high altitude. The final climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) begins at night from Kibo Hut, and you descend through the Marangu Route.

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,600m)

  • Drive from Moshi to the Rongai Gate for registration.

  • Start walking through forest with a chance to see wildlife.

  • Camp at Simba Camp.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

  • Climb through moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

  • Rest and overnight at Second Cave Camp.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

  • A shorter day with a steady climb and changing landscapes.

  • Camp at Kikelewa for dinner and rest.

Walking time: 3–4 hours

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

  • Hike steeply up to the camp at the base of Mawenzi Peak.

  • Great views and a good place to adjust to the altitude.

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

  • Cross the high mountain desert toward Kibo Hut.

  • Arrive early to rest and prepare for the night summit climb.

Walking time: 5–6 hours

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Wake around midnight and begin the climb to the top.

  • Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

  • Take photos and return to Kibo for rest, then down to Horombo Hut.

Walking time: 12–14 hours

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

  • Final walk through the forest to the gate.

  • Meet your driver and return to Moshi.

Walking time: 5–6 hours
